    Weekend Project – Pond

S & I decided to do some landscaping over the weekend.  We had this “problem” area between our sidewalk and the outside wall of the garage leading up to our front door.  I had planted a climbing shell  plant vine with a trellis when we first moved in.  It grows aggressively and S did not like the way it likes to take over everything including the sidewalk.  After latest freeze killed most of it off, he wanted to remove it completely.

We opted to put in a 90 gallon fish pond in the space and restrict the vine to the trellis.  Friday nite we headed to Lowe’s and found a pre-formed pond unit in a great shape and size.  We picked up approx 40 bricks for the edge, pump, tubing, and bio filter.  When we got home, S started digging.  He got down about 3 inches before he encountered red clay, very hard red clay.  This made for some extremely difficult labor extensive work.  S is my very own Hercules.

Sunday evening, we finally finished installing the pond.  Of course, we had run into all kinds of other issues from the turtle spitter over-spitting the pond and draining the pond causing it to pop out of the ground to the bio filter leaking and having to dig it up and slosh around in red clay mud.

Even though it turned out being a MUCH bigger weekend project, it looks great.

Have you stocked it with fish or is it going to be a fish-free zone?

I already put 4 fish in the pond. (see Flickr photos) These are a couple of fish that were in our old pond and are happy to be out of the fish tank and back into the “wild”.
